Emergency Dental Care
Dental emergencies can be painful, distressing, and unexpected. At our practice, we offer NHS emergency dental care to relieve pain, manage urgent dental issues, and prevent complications. If you’re suffering from severe discomfort or sudden dental trauma, we’re here to help.
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Not every dental issue is an emergency, but certain problems need urgent attention. You should seek emergency dental care if you have:
- Severe or unmanageable toothache
- Swelling in the face, jaw, or gums
- A knocked-out, broken, or chipped tooth (especially with pain or bleeding)
- Bleeding that won’t stop
- Signs of infection, such as pus, fever, or a bad taste in your mouth
- Trauma to the mouth or face
- Sudden loss of a filling or crown causing pain or difficulty eating
If you’re unsure whether your issue qualifies, call us—we’ll guide you.
What Happens During an Emergency Appointment?
Our main goal during an emergency appointment is to relieve your pain and stabilise the problem. Here’s what to expect:
- We’ll take a quick history of your symptoms, how long they’ve lasted, and any relevant medical details.
- A focused examination will follow, targeting the specific area causing you pain or concern.
- X-rays may be taken to assess hidden damage or infection.
- We’ll carry out immediate treatment to manage the issue—for example, draining an abscess, prescribing antibiotics, performing a temporary filling, or securing a damaged tooth.
This appointment is about stopping the problem from getting worse. Further treatment (like a permanent filling or crown) may be scheduled at a follow-up visit.
NHS Emergency Dental Charges
Emergency dental treatment is covered by NHS Band 1, a fixed fee that includes:
- Diagnosis and examination
- Pain relief and temporary treatment
- Prescriptions (if needed)
If you need additional care, we’ll clearly explain the next steps and any additional NHS bands involved.
Same-Day Appointments and Access
We aim to offer same-day emergency slots whenever possible. If we’re fully booked, we’ll help you find another NHS emergency service in your area or advise on calling NHS 111 for urgent dental help.
