Fissure Sealants

What is a fissure sealant?
A fissure sealant is a protective plastic coating placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent cavities.

It covers the tiny grooves in the teeth where food and bacteria can get stuck, protecting against decay.

Sealants are applied to healthy teeth by the dentist.

Who needs fissure sealants?
Fissure sealants are often recommended for children, as this is when their adult teeth are most vulnerable to decay. They may be advised if your child has had cavities before.

How is it done?
The process is quick and simple. The dentist will clean and dry the tooth, then apply the sealant. A special light is used to set it, usually taking a few minutes per tooth.

What happens after?
Your child may notice a slight taste, but they can eat and drink normally.

Sealants are checked during regular dental visits and can be replaced if needed.

They can last for years but may wear down over time.
