Dental Check-up

Regular dental check-ups are a key part of maintaining a healthy mouth, and under the NHS, they’re both accessible and affordable. Whether you’re a new patient or returning for routine care, here’s what to expect from an NHS dental check-up at our practice.

Initial Discussion

Your appointment starts with a brief conversation. We’ll ask about your dental history, any medical conditions, and whether you’ve noticed issues like tooth pain, bleeding gums, sensitivity, or changes in your bite. This is also your chance to raise any concerns, whether cosmetic or health-related.

Examination of Teeth and Gums

We’ll then carry out a thorough examination of your mouth, checking your teeth, gums, tongue, and the inside of your cheeks. Using a small mirror and probe, we look for signs of:

  • Tooth decay or damage
  • Gum disease
  • Plaque and tartar build-up
  • Loose or broken fillings or crowns
  • Early signs of oral cancer

We may also take X-rays to spot problems not visible to the naked eye, such as issues between teeth or below the gum line.

Oral Health Advice

Once the check-up is complete, your dentist will offer tailored advice to help you maintain good oral hygiene. This might include:

  • Brushing and flossing techniques
  • Dietary tips to reduce sugar intake
  • Recommendations for dental products

Frequency of future check-ups (usually every 6–12 months)

We’ll also explain any concerns found during the exam and whether you need additional treatment, such as fillings, scale and polish, or extractions.

Why Check-Ups Matter

Even if your teeth feel fine, regular check-ups can catch problems early before they become painful, complex, or costly. Prevention is better than cure—and better for your smile in the long run.
