Hygienist

Our aim is to help you effectively take care of your mouth. It is what you do every day that is the key message that will help you have a healthy mouth.

The things that make the most difference is being able to remove the plaque, regularly 2 x day. This may be by doing a mixture of cleaning with a toothbrush – this may be a manual or an electric brush.

We encourage you to use a fluoride containing toothpaste at least 2 x a day (generally about 1350ppm fluoride content). There are times when we may prescribe you a stronger fluoride containing toothpaste, depending on your need or risk.

Cleaning in-between your teeth with little brushes, flexible sticks or floss or floss harps, which can help to remove the plaque that toothbrushing alone cannot.

Using a Water Pik daily -especially useful with periodontal disease, crowded teeth, bridges and implants. Mouthwash can also be useful, but used before you brush.
The things you eat and drink It’s how often your teeth must cope with sugar each day that increases the risk of decay.

The most ideal way for your teeth is that you try to only have sugars at meal times- about 3 x times a day. Most people know that sugars are high in foods like chocolate, cake and biscuits. Sugars can also be hidden in good foods – examples are fruits and yoghurts.

Many drinks contain for more sugar than you imagine- a small bottle of coca cola has the equivalent of 7-8 teaspoons of sugar in it. Cutting down or stopping any sugar you add to tea or coffee can greatly reduce your risk of tooth decay. If that is not possible, swapping to an artificial sweetener can be an effective alternative

A dental scale (now known as PMPR – professional mechanical plaque removal) can help remove calculus (tartar) and plaque from your teeth and remove things which can cause inflammation. But again our key aim is to help empower you to be able to keep your mouth clean every day.

If gum inflammation (gingivitis) is not controlled, it can change into periodontal disease, which causes irreversible bone loss around your teeth. Your plaque control and its effective removal becomes even more critical. Again we will explain more about the different risk factors that can make it more likely to progress. Depending on your need, you may be asked to return from between 3-12 months.

Airflow and Scale

This is a special and very effective clean. The scale removes any hard buildups from your teeth. The Airflow system then uses a mixture of air, water and a polishing powder to blast away any stubborn day to day staining, leaving your teeth both looking and feeling very clean.

It may not be suitable for you if you have severe asthma or very deep periodontal pockets – but our team can advise you.
